In November 2020, I lay motionless, contemplating the weight of life’s regrets. As I sifted through a lifetime of memories, I found solace in the fact that my conscience was clear. For over an hour, I had been screaming for help, trapped in an immobile body after being violently thrown from my horse. I had a broken neck and could not move my legs or arms. My faithful dogs and companions, Emmett and Benson, watched beside me as I wrestled with my uncertain fate.
As the hour passed by, the sound of crunching brush heralded my rescue, and I mustered one last cry for help. Soon, I found myself whisked away to Boston on a flight for life, where I faced the sterile reality of the emergency room, separated from my husband by the unforgiving protocols of the 2020 pandemic-stricken world.
After a successful spinal fusion, I was transferred to Spaulding Rehab in Charlestown, I embarked on a grueling journey of relearning life’s most basic skills. Unable to walk, dress, or even feed myself, I relied on the tireless efforts of a dedicated team of professionals who helped me reclaim my independence. The road to recovery was paved with hardship and countless moments of despair, but amidst the struggle, a beacon of hope shone through.
Through careful planning and foresight, I secured a safety net for my family in case the unthinkable happened. My estate was in order, insurance policies set, and heartfelt letters penned to my loved ones.
The financial reserves I had meticulously built over the years provided me with the resources to seek the best treatments and therapies without the burden of tapping into other funds. What could have been an even bigger insurmountable challenge was made bearable by my diligent planning.
